About the Department  
The department offers graduate programmes leading to M. S. and Ph.D. degrees.

The Department of Horticulture has major programmes on tissue culture, varietal improvement, propagation, cultural management and seed production of horticultural crops.

HRT 501 Principles of Vegetable Production (3 cr):

Vegetable crops of Bangladesh, their importance and scope. Propagation of vegetables; environmental factors affecting vegetable production; Techniques of vegetable production.

 

HRT 506 Principles of Fruit Production (3 cr):

Status of fruit production in Bangladesh and scope for improvement. Environmental factors affecting geographical distribution of fruit plants. Propagation of fruit crops, pruning, training, unfruitfulness and alternate bearing of fruit plants; use of growth regulators in fruit production. Mineral nutrition; improvement of major fruit crops; post harvest handling of fruits.

 

HRT 507 Minor Fruits of Bangladesh (3 cr):

Importance, morphology, ecology, propagation, production method and improvement of minor fruits of Bangladesh. Prospect of introduction of exotic fruits in Bangladesh.

 

HRT 511 Spices and Plantation Crops (3 cr):

Status, importance, morphology, ecology, cultural management, processing and improvement of important spices and plantation crops (tea, coffee, rubber, arecanut and coconut).

 

HRT 515 Horticulture and Human Nutrition (3 cr):

Nutritional requirements of human beings; malnutrition problem of Bangladesh; nutritive value of common fruits and vegetables. Strategies for improvement of nutrition through horticultural crops.

 

HRT 516 Ornamental Horticulture (3 cr):

Importance, present status and scope of ornamental horticulture; classification and identification of major ornamental plants of Bangladesh; establishment and maintenance of gardens. Growing ornamental plants in pots; culture of ferns, orchids and cacti.

 

HRT 541 Research Methodology (3 cr):

Basic concepts; research planning methodology; research project preparation; data collection and presentation; literature search; preparation of thesis/dissertation and research papers. Review of scientific reports. Seminar preparation and presentation. Includes practical exercises.

 

HRT 591 Plant Propagation (3 cr):

Basic methods and fundamental principles of propagation; stock-scion relationship; root stock selection; use of growth regulators; micropropagation; nursery management. Classes include laboratory demonstration.

 

HRT 596 Reading and Conference (Credit to be arranged but not more than 3 cr):

Special/direct study assigned by the Major Professor on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee and/or interest of the student.

 

HRT 597 Special Problems (Credit to be arranged but not more than 3 cr):

Investigation of special problems in horticulture not related to a thesis problem. The investigations may consist of original research and/or literature survey.

 
HRT 598 Seminar (1 cr):

Presentation of assigned horticultural topics.

 
HRT 599 Research (Credits to be arranged but not less than 12 cr):

Original thesis research in horticulture.

 

HRT 601 Plant Tissue Culture (3 cr.):

Importance of tissue culture, principles and basic protocols; methods of tissue culture; growth regulators as related to tissue culture; virus free plant production; cryopreservation; application of tissue culture for plant improvement; callus induction and plant regeneration; interspecific and intergeneric hybridization; embryo, ovary and ovule culture; haploid plant production; anther and pollen culture; in vitro fertilization and selection; somatic hybridization, protoplasts fusion and somatic hybrid production. Classes include laboratory demonstration.

 

HRT 606 Homestead Gardening (3 cr):

Importance, scope and basic principles; models of homestead gardening; economic and nutritional aspect; placement and seasonal distribution of different plant species; pot and roof gardening. (Prerequisite HRT 501 & HRT 506).

 

HRT 611 Physiology of Horticultural Crops (3 cr):

Physiological processes as related to growth, development and productivity of fruits and vegetables. Use of growth regulators; stress physiology; postharvest physiology of fruits and vegetables; review of selected topics. (Prerequisite CBT 503 or AGR 505).

 

HRT 616 Post harvest Physiology of Horticultural Crops (3 cr):

Maturity, quality and harvest index; physiological and biochemical changes of fruits during ripening; causes of spoilage of horticultural commodities and their remedial measures; post harvest handling methods including grading and storage. (Prerequisite HRT 501 & HRT 506).

 

HRT 621 Processing of Horticultural Crops (3 cr):

Improvement and fundamental principles of basic processing and preservation techniques; food containers and necessary accessories; quality control measures and grading. Preparation of important processed products. (Prerequisite HRT 616).

 

HRT 631 Vegetable Seed Technology (3 cr):

Status and scope of vegetable seed production of Bangladesh; principles of vegetable seed production; processing and storage; seed production technology of major vegetable crops; seed certification and seed legislation.

 

HRT 642 Nutrition of Horticultural Crops (3 cr):

Role of essential elements with special reference to horticultural crops; absorption and uptake; deficiency symptoms; nutritional requirements of major horticultural crops. (Prerequisite HRT 501, HRT 506 & HRT 516).

 

HRT 651 Organic Farming (3 cr):

Modern terminologies; impact of agricultural chemicals on environment and human health; current organic movement, local, regional and global aspect; method of organic farming; certification procedures and possible laws for growing and marketing organically grown produce. Scope of organic farming in Bangladesh.

 

HRT 696 Reading and Conference (Credit to be arranged but not more than 3 cr):

Special/direct study assigned by the Major Professor on the recommendation of the advisory Committee and/or interest of the student.

 

HRT 697 Special Problems (Credits to be arranged but not more than 3 cr):

Investigation of special problems in horticulture not related to a dissertation problem. The investigations may consist of original research and/or literature survey.

 

HRT 698 Seminar (2 cr. not more than 1 cr per Term.):

Presentation of assigned horticultural topics.

 

HRT 699 Research (Credits to be arranged but not less than 30):

Original dissertation research in horticulture.

 

Note: Students having Cumulatuve GPA below 3.00 will not be allowed to enroll HRT 596, HRT 597, HRT 696 or HRT 697 until he/she raised it to 3.00 or above.
