 BSMRAU Organization

The University Grants Commission (UGC) supervises the academic standards of the BSMRAU. The management structure of the University is composed of three wings: Administrative, Academic, Research and Outreach. Vice-Chancellor provides leadership in achieving the objectives of the University.

Administrative Wing

The administration at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) is headed by a full time Vice - Chancellor who is the Chief Executive Officer of the University. He is assisted by the Registrar in administrative affairs and advised by the Treasurer in financial maters.

Academic Wing

The Academic Wing consists of sixteen academic departments. The Dean of Graduate Studies coordinates the academic activities of the University at postgraduate level. The Department Head administrates academic programs within the respective department.

Eight departments namely Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, Agronomy, Crop Botany, Entomology, Genetics and Plant Breeding, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, and Soil Science offer graduate programs leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Two departments viz. Agricultural Economics and Agroforestry and Environment offer graduate program leading to M.S. degree. The Department of Statistics offers supporting courses required by other departments. Five new academic departments namely Animal Science, Fisheries, Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Agricultural Engineering yet to offer courses.

Board of Studies

Each Academic Department has a Board of Studies chaired by the Head of the respective department. Board of  Studies reviews departmental academic programmes, course requirements, course offering plan and related matters.

Classrooms and Student Laboratories

Class lecture rooms possess ample modern audiovisual equipment. Well equipped laboratories for students are available for instruction and research.

Library

The library is an important facility for  support and development of high quality teaching, research and outreach programmes. The BSMRAU library houses a comprehensive and current collection of local and foreign journals relating to the agricultural social sciences. The library includes about fifteen thousand books and is being expanded through an active acquisition programme. In addition to its books and journals collection, the library provides an inter-library loan service and a computerized database of Bangladesh research titles and abstracts.

The library is open daily throughout the year, except on weekends and holidays. It is  accessible to students, teachers, officers and other personnel associated with the University. CD-ROM searching services at a minimum cost is also available in the library. An audio-visual room with modern equipment is attached to the library building and is available as a training classroom and for holding conferences, seminars and workshops. Some group study rooms are also available.

Computer Center

The three Computer Centers, one for faculty, one for students and another one for training are equipped with 32 microcomputers and peripheral equipment. The Computer Centers serve the needs for teaching, research, outreach, and administrative and financial management at the University. They also provide training facilities for BSMRAU faculty, students, and staff. A wide range of software for word-processing, statistical and spreadsheet analysis, and database management are available.

Research Wing

The research and related activities of each academic department are coordinated by the Director (Research). The teachers are actively involved in research. There are ten research laboratories with modern sophisticated equipment for conducting both applied and basic research in agricultural sciences. Additionally, field research facilities and a meteorological station are available to support research activities at the University.

Electron Microscopy Laboratory

Both transmission and scanning electron microscopes are available in the laboratory.

Microbiology Laboratory

The laboratory is equipped with incubators, autoclave, clean bench, ultra centrifuge, high speed centrifuge and freeze dryer.

Crop Physiology Laboratory

Portable photosynthesis measuring apparatus, automatic leaf area meter, sunceptometer, porometer, pressure bomb apparatus, low temperature incubator, root length scanner and other equipment for studies related to physiological aspects of plants are available in this laboratory.

Analytical Laboratory

Analytical research using 15N analyzer, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, gas chromatograph, double beam spectrophotometer and high performance liquid chromatograph are available in this laboratory.

Chemistry Laboratory

Facilities for qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis, including Kjeldahl apparatus, draft chamber, Bremner's distillation apparatus, biomass carbon measuring apparatus, incubators, centrifuge, etc. are available in this laboratory.

Tissue Culture Laboratory

Incubators adjustable  for any day-length and temperature fluctuation patterns, clean bench for handling tissue cultures and facilities for application of modern tissue culture techniques to plant propagation and breeding and a gel electrophoresis apparatus are available in this laboratory.

Soil Physics Laboratory

Aggregate analyzer, permeameter, pressure plate membrane and a wide variety of field research equipment, such as propeller meter and infiltrometer are placed in this laboratory.

Entomology Laboratory

This laboratory is equipped with incubators for rearing insect pests and their natural enemies under controlled environmental conditions, microscope with TV monitor which can produce a high resolution image of small insects.

Extension Research Laboratory

Physical facilities with various items of modern audio-visual equipment to facilitate extension research and teaching are available in this laboratory.

Agroforestry and Environment Research Laboratory

The Agroforestry and environmental laboratory is equipped with modern facilities for research in the discipline.

Field Research Facilities

A sixteen hectares research farm with controlled irrigation and drainage system has been developed for field research work. The research land is suitable for growing both upland lowland crops. The research farm is equipped with modern facilities, including  agricultural implements, storage facilities, crop drying and threshing equipment, a well equipped workshop and an irrigation system with reservoirs and a pumping station. A field laboratory building has been constructed for handling field research materials. For conducting experiments under con-trolled conditions glass and net-houses facilities are also available.

Meteorological Station

A meteorological station, in operation since 1988, provides daily records of climatological conditions at the BSMRAU field experimental site.

Outreach  Wing

The Director (Outreach) coordinates the overall outreach activities of the University. The activities include dissemination of the results of basic and applied research of the University to the field staff, officer of DAE, NGOs and ultimate uses.
